Our Kool-Kore liquid chill blocks utilize an all nickel-plated copper construction featuring a 'tubed' core without any soldered or threaded connections, thereby eliminating the potential for leaks. This unique design produces an extremely thin section water block providing:

  • Significant space 'footprint' reduction.
  • Significant weight reduction.
  • Significant cost reduction (less prime alloy materials required).
Kool-Kore SCR Savings Benefits Example

Additionally, the above qualities are exponentially increased in stacked application or applications utilizing multiple SCR Kool-Kore chill blocks.

Advantages of the SCR Kool-Kore design can be further understood by discussing, for example, the 4000 series. Available in 2000, 3000 and 4000 model series, the 4000 represents a nominal 4" x 4" double sided chill block. The cooling surfaces are flat and smooth, intended for accepting mountings on either one or both sides. The water path is completely contained within a ½" OD tube, allowing easy, typical hose connections. The section thickness of the entire liquid cooled portion is only ½" thick! Each unit also features a typical center through hole for easy and precise location of devices and components at assembly, and utilizes side cut-out clearances to accommodate mounting clamps with bolt centers as small as 3.5" if the particular application so allows.

Your choice of three configurations (for 2000, 3000 and 4000 series) are as follows:

  • Standard
  • Universal
  • Integrated Bus

Continuing discussion of the example 4000 model series,

Standard Kool-Kore (Busless)

The Standard configuration follows the traditional idea where bus bar attachments are made simply by 'inline' clamping. While this method is quite acceptable it does increase stack space by the thickness of the bus bar multiplied by the number of buss connections used in the application. This also increases finished total unit weight, and elevates total unit cost since prime alloys are 'affected' by 'the pound' where this method of bus connection mandates the bus bar 'overlapping' the chill block.

Kool-Kore with universal bus Kool-Kore with universal bus

The Universal configuration has all the same great qualities as the Standard but incorporates a protruding bus tab equipped to make a bolt-mounted bus connection. By itself it requires slightly more material in manufacture (therefore a bit more weight and cost) than the Standard configuration, but offers a cost, weight and space reduction in the total application package. The special bolt-mounted design allows a 'space saving' bus bar connection that has no influence or overall increase on 'stack thickness' - unlike the conventional means of bus attachment. The Universal SCR chill block is perfect for utilizing a 'one style fits all' approach (like the traditional Standard) but can be assembled with our standard 'right', 'left' or 'straight' stocked nickel plated copper buses for a significant savings in overall foot-print space. And if our off-the-shelf bus bars don't suit your specific application we offer quick turn around on custom buses, or, you can simply make connection to your own. Connection hardware is easily to install and included with each Universal SCR Kool-Kore for use in making connection to user-supplied buses.

Kool-Kore with integrated bus Kool-Kore with integrated bus

The Integrated Bus configuration offers the most in terms of saving space, weight reduction, and lowered total cost when put into application. This is because the bus bar is integrated as part of the SCR Kool-Kore chill block body. Off-the-shelf units are available with common 'right', 'left' and 'straight' buses and custom buses are available. Integrating the bus typically equates to saving a piece of prime alloy material ¼" thick by 4" square (in the 4000 series example at hand). This means a weight reduction of around 1.28 pounds and a ¼" space reduction in a stack which is further multiplied by each SCR Kool-Kore Chill block in the design assembly. At the time of this writing the price of copper is nearly $6.00 per pound, which suggests about a $7.68 savings in material while allowing less total assembly weight as well as assembly space! The Integrated Bus configuration also has the same great features as the Standard configuration: pilot hole for precise device location; side cut-outs for mounting clamp bolt centers as close as 3.5"; and the ½" thick thin-section core with a 'joint-less' ½" O.D. tubed water path that is easily hose connectable.
